Yes, many STIs have no symptoms and if left untreated can cause long term health impacts, that’s why it is so important to get tested as you may not know you have one.

Consent is knowingly and freely agreeing to take part in sex or sexual activity. Consent must be voluntary, informed and you can change your mind anytime.  

Informed consent means you understand what you are saying yes to and there is nothing preventing you from indicating if you agree, decline or change your mind to take part in sex or sexual activity.  

Yes, you can bring a friend or support person, but part of your appointment may be done without them in the room

Yes. Many STIs and other infections are spread through oral sex. Anyone exposed to an infected partner can get an STI in the mouth, throat, genitals, or rectum.

According to Australian data, Chlamydia & Herpes are the most frequent among sexually transmitted infections.

The fact is if you’re sexually active you’re always at risk of STIs. The best approach is to get tested: 

• every 6-12 months (just like a dental check-up) 

• when you’ve had unprotected sex

• when you change sexual partners 

• or if you’re showing any symptoms.  

An STI check usually involves giving a urine sample. If you have had unprotected oral or anal sex, a throat swab or blood tests may be required. Sometimes you can collect swabs yourself – Clinic 35 will advise.

Under the National Cervical Screening Program, women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74 who have ever been sexually active are recommended to have a Cervical Screening Test every five years. Now you can opt to do a self-collected swab.  

There are now more options than ever before to reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV.

• Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an oral medication that prevents HIV in people at risk of infection with the virus.
• PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV by up to 99% when taken as prescribed.
• All GPs (doctors) in Australia can prescribe PrEP.
• PrEP doesn’t protect against sexually transmissible infections (STI). Condoms are still the best protection against STIs (including syphilis, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia).
• HIV transmission can also be prevented by using condoms during anal or vaginal sex, using sterile injecting equipment, not sharing injecting equipment or achieving and maintaining “undetectable” HIV viral loads if you are HIV-positive.
