Gateway Health is inviting the community to show their support for those lost to or affected by overdose in the lead-up to International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) on August 31.

This year’s theme, “Together we can”, highlights the strength of coming together and standing in support of those connected to the tragedy of overdose.

The community can visit the reception areas at the Wodonga or Wangaratta offices to leave their message on the overdose remembrance tree or get a purple ribbon to wear.

The purple ribbons were made by residents of the Wangaratta Therapeutic Community (TC) and Gateway Health staff – many of whom have a very personal connection to overdose.

“Residents of the Therapeutic Community are very passionate about supporting those at risk of overdose,” Executive Director Integrated Care Simon Donohoe said.

“Some of them have experienced an overdose themselves and they want to be a role model for recovery and resilience to other people experiencing substance dependency.”

This year, headspace Albury Wodonga and headspace Wangaratta will also have remembrance trees in their reception areas.

“We participated to recognise that substance dependence impacts young people whether personally or someone they know,” Program Manager at headspace Albury Wodonga and headspace Wangaratta Leah Tylee said.

“It’s also an important reminder to speak with and educate young people about the risks of addiction and how they can access support.”

The month will also include the launch of the new Ovens and Murray Alcohol and Other Drugs Catchment Plan.

Gateway Health, headspace Albury Wodonga and headspace Wangaratta are hosting vigils for IOAD on August 29 in Wodonga at the water tower at Woodland Grove and at the Wangaratta water tower.

Messages can also be left digitally on the Overdose Day website.

International Overdose Awareness Day is an initiative of the Penington Institute.

While Gateway Health receives government funding to support the critical work it does, it is also open to donations and sponsorship to help it continue the vital work it does for those experiencing diverse health and wellbeing needs.
