This week marks three years since Gateway Health’s Therapeutic Community (TC) in Wangaratta opened its doors, welcoming its first resident on February 15, 2022. Since then, the facility on Greta Road has provided support to 165 individuals seeking to address their dependency on alcohol or other drugs.

The Wangaratta Therapeutic Community takes a holistic approach to treatment, addressing the many complex factors that contribute to substance dependency. Many residents experience co-occurring mental and physical health conditions, with a significant number having histories of trauma, including family violence and abuse.

The program emphasises group work and peer support, complemented by individual case management and counselling. Residents also have access to Gateway Health’s broader services and are linked with local organisations, including Hume Riverina Community Legal Service, The Centre, Beyond Housing and Northeast Health and financial counselling through Upper Murray Family Care.

The full program is structured over 12 months and includes four stages, allowing residents to tailor their participation based on their individual needs and recovery goals.

“The focus of the Wangaratta Therapeutic Community is for residents to build understanding, skills and strategies that empower them to make different choices in their lives,” Program Manager of the Wangaratta Therapeutic Community Jen Rollings said.

One resident shared their experience: “Recovery is hard work, but the TC program is helping me feel capable of living the rest of my life without drugs. I know myself better now. I think I can cope with anything life might throw at me, as long as I have the right supports around me.”

Another resident encouraged others considering the program: “For anyone who’s thinking of getting help to stop using drugs or alcohol, if you’re ready to really work on yourself, this program is challenging but so worth it.”
