Janine’s Journey: A Life-Changing Commitment to Health
For Janine, life had always been busy, balancing work, family and everyday responsibilities. But one unexpected evening changed everything, forcing her to take a closer look at her health. What began as a frightening moment in a hospital emergency room became the turning point for a life-changing commitment to health. Now, after months of dedication, support from Gateway Health and a determined mindset, Janine has taken control of her diabetes, her weight, and her overall wellbeing.
Her journey began one evening when she suddenly felt unwell, shaky, confused and unable to answer simple questions. Her blood sugar level was alarmingly high at 29.7. A trip to the hospital confirmed the diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, marking the start of a difficult but ultimately rewarding journey. “I thought it would just be a matter of taking medication, losing a little weight and getting on with life, but it was much harder than that,” Janine recalls.
At first, managing diabetes felt overwhelming. Medication side effects, inconsistent blood sugar control and a demanding work-life balance made progress difficult. Frustration set in as one treatment after another failed to improve her condition. It wasn’t until she met Dr Nufail Khan at Gateway Health that everything changed. “Dr Khan took the time to listen and work with me on a plan I could actually achieve. He showed me he cared and that I wasn’t alone in this,” Janine shares.
With a newfound sense of direction, Janine committed to small, sustainable lifestyle changes. She worked closely with the diabetes educators at Gateway Health and Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW), adjusted her medication, and re-evaluated her work-life balance. A major decision to change jobs reduced her stress levels, allowing her to focus on her health. “Finding the right support system made all the difference. The nurses, doctors and diabetes educators became my team, helping me achieve what once felt impossible.”
Over the past 18 months, Janine has been on a steady weight loss journey, with the last five months being the most successful. Since May 2024, she has lost 8kg, bringing her closer to her long-term goal. Improved diabetes control has given her a new lease on life, more energy, better mental health, and the ability to say “yes” to things she once avoided. “Now, my kids have to keep up with me!” she laughs.
For Janine, the biggest lesson has been learning to prioritise herself. “I used to put everyone else first, but I’ve realised that taking care of my own health means I can be there for my family in a much better way.” Letting go of the pressure to be a people-pleaser was difficult, but it gave her the clarity to focus on what truly mattered.
Her advice to others struggling to take that first step? “Just do it. Stop waiting for the perfect moment and start with small, realistic changes. Accept the support around you and don’t be afraid to try different approaches until you find what works for you. You are worth it.”
Now, Janine is embracing an active, vibrant life. She spends her days doing what she loves, riding her horse, walking her dog, tending to her garden, and simply enjoying the freedom of good health. “It has taken a team of people who believed in me, but the effort has been worth it. I still have ups and downs, but I know I’m on the right path.”
