Kevin’s Cancer Journey: How Gateway Health GPs Made a Difference
When Kevin was diagnosed with Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma in 2019, his cancer journey began, supported by expert GP care at Gateway Health, particularly from Dr Khan, who played a critical role in his treatment and overall wellbeing. What started as a small growth on his back led to a series of medical interventions, treatments and crucial decisions about his future. Throughout his journey, Kevin remained steadfast in his faith, supported by his loving wife, Varelle, his family and the dedicated healthcare professionals at Gateway Health and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Kevin’s diagnosis was confirmed in June 2019 following a biopsy at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. By July, he commenced 28 sessions of radiotherapy at the Albury/Wodonga Cancer Centre, followed by major surgery in October at Peter Mac. Over the following years, Kevin navigated his cancer journey with regular scans, further treatments and ongoing medical decisions that shaped his care plan. Despite metastases appearing in his lungs, rib, pancreas and psoas muscle, Kevin approached each stage of treatment with resilience and gratitude for the care he received.
Through it all, Kevin found immense support from his healthcare team. “The doctors and staff at Gateway Health acted quickly, ensuring I had access to the right specialists,” he recalls. “Dr Khan was instrumental in guiding my care and I could not speak more highly of the professionalism and compassion shown by everyone involved in my treatment.”
Beyond medical care, Kevin draws his greatest strength from his Christian faith and trust in God. One key inspiration from the Bible remains steadfast: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your path.’ (Proverbs 3:5-6). Varelle, Kevin’s wife of over 46 years, remains an ever-present loving support. With her nursing background, she kept him grounded, focused on the present and ensured he received the best possible care. His family, church community and lifelong friends continue to play a vital role, offering ongoing encouragement and strength through every stage of his journey.
Faith was at the heart of Kevin’s journey. He never questioned “Why me?” but instead embraced each day with gratitude. His experience as a chaplain and minister shaped his perspective, having spent years offering comfort and guidance to others facing difficult times. “My faith in God has not wavered. I know He has been with me through it all,” Kevin reflects.
Kevin continues to stay active, embracing his passion for cycling as a source of strength and enjoyment. Whether riding solo or with his cycling mates, he finds joy and purpose in staying on the move. As his health changes, he adapts, setting new goals while appreciating the camaraderie, freedom, and peace that cycling brings him.
In December 2024, after much reflection and discussion with his family and Dr Khan, Kevin made the decision to focus on quality of life rather than aggressive treatment. Surrounded by loved ones, Kevin remains focused on living fully, guided by the ongoing support of his GP and the people who matter most. “I am still alive and I have meaning,” he says. “My life is not defined by cancer, but by the love, faith and purpose that continue to guide me.”
Kevin’s journey is a testament to the vital role of GP care at Gateway Health, where early intervention, expert medical advice, and compassionate support have helped him navigate the complexities of cancer treatment. His story stands as a reminder that even in uncertain times, hope, purpose, and meaningful choices remain within reach.
