New mental health service in north-east

Gateway Health is helping deliver a new Commonwealth Government service providing additional mental health support to Victorians during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Anyone struggling with anxiety, depression or other mental health concerns around Covid-19 can call a single number - 1800 595 212 - for easy access and referral to a wide range of support services.

Depending on your need, you may be referred to a range of different specialised services – with help and support every step of the way to make introductions for you and smooth the process.

The service is being provided from 15 different “hubs” the Commonwealth Government has established around Victoria. For northern Victoria, the two chosen hub locations are Bendigo and Wodonga.

Across all the areas served by Gateway Health, people can call the same 1800 number – and in the north-east the call will go through to one of the helpful specialist team Gateway Health has assembled in Wodonga.

The new service, called HeadtoHelp, was launched in September 2020 by the Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, as part of a Commonwealth $31.9 million mental health support package for Victoria. Gateway Health has been engaged by the Commonwealth to operate the Wodonga “hub”, serving communities across the north east of the State.

HeadtoHelp aims to support people in mental health distress by providing easier access to teams of mental health workers, including psychologists, mental health nurses, social workers, and alcohol and drug workers.

The development of HeadtoHelp follows concerns over rising incidents of self-harm, and a spike in the use of services like Beyond Blue, Lifeline and Kids Helpline by Victorians, including here in the north-east.

Anyone struggling with the impact of COVID on their life can get quick mental health support by calling 1800 595 212 between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. There is also a walk-in service available via Gateway Health Wodonga, located at 155 High Street. Our Mental Health Services page has full details of all our programs including HeadtoHelp.
