Gateway Health collaborates with workplaces to support the health and wellbeing of employees and their families. Having a healthier workplace can lead to numerous benefits for employees and build workplaces where employees feel valued, have better team relationships and are more likely to show long term commitment to working with their workplace. Healthy workplaces can help increase productivity and engagement with unhealthy workers nine times more likely to have sick days compared to healthy employees. They can create a better return on investment for your business as the healthiest Australian employees are almost three times more productive than their unhealthy colleagues.  Promoting and supporting health in the workplace makes good business sense. Business research conducted by Medibank Private and Price Waterhouse Coopers indicates that every $1 a business spends on employee health and wellbeing programs they will receive a return on investment of $3 or more.

Victoria, along with the rest of Australia, is facing an increase in preventable chronic disease. This increase in these diseases is largely due to a range of risk factors including levels of obesity, low fruit and vegetable intake, low physical activity levels and high smoking and alcohol intake. Workplaces are key settings for addressing health. A health promoting environment can help staff to develop healthy eating and physical exercise habits and shows commitment to enhancing the emotional, social, physical, health and wellbeing of communities.

What is a healthy workplace?

A healthy workplace supports and encourages healthy behaviours in its employees, making healthy choices the easy choices and is one where employers and employees work together to support and promote good health. (Department of Health)

To help a healthy workplace, Gateway Health supports the implementation of the Achievement Program. A free, state-wide health and wellbeing framework, this is also available for all early childhood services and schools in Victoria. The Achievement Program has been jointly developed by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Cancer Council Victoria. As of August 2016, there are 945 Victorian workplaces registered with the Achievement Program.

Registering for the Achievement Program will give you access to all the support and resources you need via an online portal, which allows you to work at your own pace and track your progress using:

• Evidence-based guidance and tools
• Connect with health promotion experts for ongoing support
• Select health priorities that suit your service
• Build on your existing health and wellbeing initiatives.

 As part of the Achievement Program, workplaces are provided with a step-by-step guide and resources to create healthy environments.
